School of the Future - Future-focused Teaching and Learning

To prepare teachers and students for this exciting facility, two open plan spaces were created in 2015 and the associated future-focused teaching and learning opportunities were enabled for the Year 1 and Year 3 cohorts. Flexible furniture and groupings were researched, trialled, reviewed and redirected where necessary. The NAPLAN results in Year 3 in 2015 were outstanding and the inquiry learning exhibited in the Year 1 classrooms was meaningful and stimulating. Internal evaluations of both areas showed that increased student engagement was the most beneficial outcome to students' learning.

2016 has seen flexible learning environments being used again by Year 1 and Year 3 students, with the Year 5 cohort also implementing the structures in their open learning space. The teachers have reported that the collaborative environments have provided them with collegial support, professional development through mentoring and feedback from their peers, as well as opportunities to develop their ability to facilitate learning in student-centred environments.
